New Year Ghosts

Last night I joined some Thai friends for a beer, and naturally some food, there is always a spicy snack or four in a gathering with Thais.

We got talking about spirits, not the ones you drink, the ghostly ones! I asked if there were any well-known tales about Thai ghosts traditionally linked to New Year.

Sadly not. One of the girls did know about a happening, just a couple of years ago. What she told us was the tragic story of a young man.

A New Year party had been arranged, and all their friends invited. Soon enough people were arriving, the gossip was flowing, beer bottles clinked, jokes told, all good fun.

The life and soul of the party was grinning and joking with all present. One of the others asked him why he had blood on his face. He just laughed off the question.

As the blood on his clothes started spreading a newcomer to the party burst in, shaking and crying, said, “I’ve just driven past a horrible accident. Our friend’s car was involved!”

“But he is here!” They all looked around, he was no longer there.
